I was kinda lost on my life recently… What you expected an IT Engineer‘s Job?
As my title stated, IT mean Information Technology or some said Internet Technology, full title should be Information Technology Engineer, you should able to imagine what my job suppose to be…
Computer, Server, Printer, Computer Networking, Wireless Networking, Software Configuration…
But when my friend ask me what am I doing now, I seen like don’t know how to answer. I only told him/her I work as the highest salary office boy in Penang.
My current job is good, boss very flexible, salary acceptable if not compare with my peer, but… The job that assign to me are not related to my job scope. Some time, boss ask me send invoice to client, send contract to client, collect cheque from customer, pay phone bills, pay internet bills, deliver some cable to contractor, send UPS to client, deploy network cable, CCTV, weekly site meeting.
I was a bit LOST, my job not much related to IT or computer stuff, I feel that I was outdated from computer world, and wasted my talent if continue doing this kind of job. I need to learn more thing! On the other hand, I still not much nervous on my current life, although not much knowledge can be obtain on my current job, I still have the initiative on self learning, You might curious, so far what have I learn my self…
Outside world are very competitive, without more knowledge, is hard to compete with other…
Some friend ask me to quit the current job, but some friend advice me not to, because current market is not good, hard to find a suitable job. I would like to heard what my reader would like my path to be, what your suggest?
Why quit if you are enjoying the life there? Before you decided to quit, ask yourself this “What I really want in my life?”. If you know what you really want, then go for it. Otherwise, no matter where you go, you will end up with the same cycle.
Hi Calvyn,
First thing first, you will need to ask yourself. What do you want from your job or career? Money, knowledge, position, passion or …? What do you wanna be in 5 or 10 years time?
I hope the above helps! ;=)
Bro Calvyn, consider yourself is blessed compared to those who have no job or even live poor. Of course we can’t expect what we want we will get, many older peoples told me study cannot help u in work, we have to gain knowledge our own. And, i am sure you have great knowledges in IT which I always wanna learn from you. True say, my bro also an IT manager like you. look for him http://www.gabriellai.com
Well, since you are lost, you just need to find your way out. If there are commitments in your life at the moment, don’t quit your job unless you have good reasons. Experience and knowledge are yours to seek in every moment in your life. Don’t worry muc coz there are ppl who are even more outdated than you…. 😀
Honestly speaking, I am an IT Engineer too. For me, I feel a job that will not taken all my time is the perfect job I wish. As you know, in IT line, most of them need to standby, work overnight, work during weekend or even holiday. I was one of them at past.. Although you learn a lot or get high paid, but what’s the point??? Your life is totally blank except WORK.
If the job can’t give you knowledge, then do something else..The blog u having here I think is a nice move you made :). More important is, it fully own by you. YOU are the boss here. I guess this should be your direction.
Keep it up.
depends on what you want long term. i believe you are pretty comfortable right now, though the work is not at all related.
if IT is yr long term career goal, then, you’ll know what to do 🙂
ya..current market condition not really good..it’s better to consider twice b4 making decision…i just heard my boss(not google)said that should find stability of job 1st then only think about income…
for ur info, intel share drop very bad…i thnk frm $30++ to $15++(roughly), motorola now i thnk only $8++ nia..while small company wont suffer that much…
Yo, bro. Lost ?!?! nvm, as long as still alive. Find out something u interest, boost on it. Keep moving forward!!
My job scope is servicing copier. But my boss ask me to collect payment, delivery also…
Well, my interest is in IT also. But this job give me a flexible time, good pay…
Hi Calvyn,
Its a tough world out there. However, I believe you are still pretty young at this juncture and have not crafted a career path for yourself. Like one of the comments, I also suggest that you ask yourself where you want to be in the next 5 – 10 years. Do you see yourself doing what you are going right now? If not, then you will have to start from now to think of how to get there.
Wishing you all the best in your career!
Hi Calvyn,
You have lots of great comments here for your lost path. Perhaps, you would like to use the weekend to have a good thought over the great points mentioned ;=)
Hello Calvyn
It seems like I’m in your same situation… nah, dun listen to ahmike that I’m a manager.. if I’m not wrong, ur boss must be a chinese lor.. Yea, if chinese boss, they will fully utilized you to do most of the job instead of hiring another one guy to send invoices or pull cables 🙂 Well, I’ve been with a chinese boss, yea, flexible time, but my scope is totally too too wide, i need to do servers, deliver servers, installation, networks stuff, linux stuff, backup solution, i need to meet customers, talk to customers, sometime need to eat shit lagi… Wow, it seems like I’m letting go my fire here.. hehe, nola… but chinese bosses are this kind lor.. well, as long as you enjoy ur job, just continue, yea, sometimes u need to do many stuff, but yet, sometimes you’re relax too… if you go to another place, perhaps you won’t have this flexibility lor, and somemore u’ll face challenges like inner politics lor… knowledge will not be able to learn finish of course.. when u learnt this stuff, tomorrow another technology sure came out… i’ll suggest you to focus on what you do best. If you think you likes Windows, then focus on windows.. actually Windows have many loopholes, so how to cover the holes? you found it, then u’re making tons of money lor.. if you like Linux, go for it.. you might be doing lotsa things, but still, focus back what you do best
Cheers bro!!
yo my friend, the market condition right now is not promising. I expect alot of giants to be hit hard. if you know how the giants work, they cut headcount like mad if they are not meeting their forecast, while in a chinamen company they hardly do something so drastic.
yo bro. just follow ur feeling la. If u like this job n enjoy a lot. then u continue doing this.
but if u find another better job tat really in par of what you want in your life then i suggest u to leave. Cuz tat’s the job tat will lead u to where u wan to go.
The job can also be called Jack of All Trade. Sometimes, it can be tough to justify the thing you are doing but I think it’ll be rewarding in later stage of our life. Just believe in yourself, that’s what count.
I would advise you to stay put, it’s not easy in IT field unless you really want to leave which it is not wise now. You know la… IT, I’m also IT graduate, we’re all in the same shoes, bao sua bao hai one, they expect you to know everything about programming, hardware, software, yada yada yada instead of being a specialist in one field. Of course if you are working with those huge huge companies then different story.
If you are craving for new knowledge, you can do it even with your working environment, it’s just a matter of you want or not. Learning opportunities is everywhere.
To me, as long that I got the felxibility and the pay is enought to sustain my lifestyle and still have enough to spare to be saved for rainy fays or some future plans, then I would might as well stay put. Flexibility is very very important to me but others I don’t know la, that’s just me.
But if you got something better that is on offer to you, then go for it!
I’m in sales line for more than years. Since I was appointed as sales manager 6-7 years ago, I got answer to sales figure monthly. The pressure has driven me to the limit.
I’ve got lesser and lesser time with my family and friends……. Worse case was while I was working in a Swedish corporation, the boss is just too much. Since 2 service engineers left (due to stress and no appreciation from the boss), I had to take up their tasks (even I’m mechanical engineer, but my role was sales manager), all my weekends and public holidays burned.
This Swedish company squeezes the employee more than the Japanese and Chinese company.
Due to lots of frustration, I’ve started to focus in work life balance in one of my blog.

Guys, life is not just work, life is a process, do what you like and live to the fullest.
Don’t stay at the office just to please your boss or colleague. Be efficient and be with your love ones.
